Buy 1 get one free, a victory in a draw, and the numbers game

Good One Sherlock

When I woke up this morning the first thing that crossed my mind was if I was really going to find Number 3 today. I didn't want to have to look for him/her/it. I also didn't want to unjustly tag someone as a Number 3 for the sake of having something to write about.

Vicken, Vicken, Vicken....don't you know that patience truly is a virtue? -No- Well, you should, because all you have to do is go out for some coffee before your studies and just take a look around. Number 3 will show their face. And not just one, but two (2) Number 3s will give you all the material you need for today's entry.

Turns out, the omniscient freak from the previous paragraph was right. One trip to Starbucks was all I needed. In fact, I didn't even have to get out of my car to spot today's Number 3.

It has become a daily routine to get a cup o' joe and a bagel before I start studying. It's a carefully calculated schedule. Wake up at 8:30 am, get to Starbucks by 8:33 am, get out by 8:40, grab a bagel from Brueger's by 8:50 am, back home by 8:54 am, and start studying by 9:00 am.

As you can probably guess, Number 3 interrupted this routine, not by much, but enough for me to make a big stink out of it.

I pulled into the parking lot of the shopping center at 8:32 am and was going to park my car when not one, but TWO Number 3's tipped me over the edge.

As i began turning into the parking spot, which happened to be right in front of Starbucks, two ladies, who were obviously in a very important conversation, one that couldn't be moved to sitting area, sidewalk, another galaxy, were in the middle of the parking spot and wouldn't move. I'm a patient guy. I didn't honk, wave, clap, snap, yell or anything of that nature. I sat there and assumed that one of them would see my car pulling in, and would gesture the other one to get the hell out of the way. Ya....... One of the ladies saw me, made eye contact, and just continued on as if to suggest, "Hey pal I see ya, but once we're done, then you can park." Strike 1.

The lady who had her back to me was smoking a cigarette. With one final drag, she flicked the butt and hit the nose of my car.
Strike 2. Strike 3. Strike 4. Set. Match. Game.

*blood pressure rises, my face forms the "are you kidding me" grimace, and a Good one Sherlock begins to write itself in my head. I digress...

I started rolling into the spot not giving a damn who was standing in the way and was maybe 6 feet away when they FINALLY realized that it may be a good idea to move out of a spot that is intended for CARS.  Of course I was the rude, inconsiderate one.

Should have just hit em. What???

Sports

Champions League play continued today and it saw a confident Manchester United squad head to France to take on Olympique Marseille in the first leg of the round of 16.

Based on Fergie's line-up, it was obvious that he wanted to come out of this game with a positive result and head into the second leg with the upper hand. With the likes of Berbatov, Rooney, and Nani leading the attack, it was certain that United would get a fast start especially along the flanks.

The first 18-20 minutes, the red devils were able to successfully dictate the flow of the match, keeping possession, attacking at will, and creating chances. The 70-72 minutes that followed were a complete disaster.

Van Der Sar chalked up another clean sheet thanks to our defense who despite their inability to pass the ball, held their own. The ex- French National Team captain Evra responded well to the Boo Boys he received, and although very young and nervous on the ball, Smalling really filled in well with Ferdinand still injured. Johnny O'Shea was a surprise as i was certain Rafael would get the starting nod, but one thing I have learned is to never question Sir Alex Ferguson. And it is without saying that Vidic had a great game, a real force in the back.

I can go on and on about how poorly our midfield played. Maybe it was the formation used today that really seemed unsettling to the players. Carrick, Fletcher, and Gibson could not connect on a pass for the life of them. With Giggs on the bench, and a semi-injured Scholes held  out as a sub, there was no veteran presence to really help manage the game. Very disappointing

It was really an unfortunate story for our attackers. Rooney looked uncomfortable out on the wing, and although he is a versatile player, he didn't seem like he was happy running the flanks. Berbatov is cool and collected with his brightest season so far for United. His CL scoring record, however, has been dismal. And quite possibly one of our biggest stars, Nani, showed just how much he needs to grow and mature. I have been his biggest critic all year just because I know he can be our next Cristiano Ronaldo, but I will not let off until he shows me something to hang my hat on.

Overall impressions? We didn't get a crucial away goal, but at the same time we didn't concede on either. When the second leg heads back to Old Trafford in Manchester, we will need a win. A draw and we are out.

Brilliance

As I mentioned in my first post, brilliance doesn't have to be a billion dollar investment. It doesn't have to come in the news, and can most likely be found right under your nose.

Today's award for brilliance goes to Alex Berenson, the author of The Number, which I began reading for my finance class this semester. It's not a textbook, but may contain just as much information as one. It's a fun and very enlightening read that doesn't put you to sleep with boring stories about Wall Street. It's one of those books that claims that it is a must read before investing and putting your money into the hands of "professionals", which I was a little skeptical of at first, but have come to see the truth in that statement. I mean come on, when Mark Cuban writes the foreword and he himself states that he would have loved to have a guide like this before he entered the market, there has to be some truth to it. Below you will find a link about the author and The Number.

That'll do it for today folks.
